If You’re Going To Do A Meta-Ranking…

It’s no secret that I have a lot of respect for the Bloody Elbow consensus rankings. To me, they have more significance than just one person’s opinion. If one person ranks a fighter in the top 25, that doesn’t say much, but if everybody ranks a fighter in the top 25, that says a lot more.

But recently, the rankings have been overhauled. They now have a grand total of two sources ranking 25 fighters, while all other sources rank just ten. I suppose calling them the “Fight Matrix/MMA Madman top 25 meta-rankings” doesn’t sound as cool.

I would petition to have my ELO rankings included on their list, but I’m having some real trouble getting the ELO system finished. The big problem is that all fights are sorted by date, but there’s no way to sort a fighter competing multiple times in the same day. So the ELO rankings are on ice until I get it figured out. Then I need to fine-tune it a bit.

The point is – at this point, you might as well just rank ten fighters and be done with it, or just provide a link to Fight Matrix, whose rankings are probably the best out there right now anyway.

It’s just the sad state of the MMA ranking scene. Though, it comes with the territory. Ranking more than 10 fighters per division without the assistance of a system is tough.

I’ll never outright accuse them, but sometimes the other site you mention’s rankings are so similar to ours.. I often wonder if they start with my rankings as a template and shuffle it to their liking. Not a bad idea…

There are a lot of critics, but not a lot of people willing to step up and offer their own ranking. But even if they did, they would likely come up with a “safe” ranking resulting from groupthink.

And now that I look at it… you’re probably right about the other site using your rankings as a template.

But hey, why provide something of value to the MMA community when you can just say “Josh Sampo LOLOLOL”

We’d love to have more input and more good rankings to include. If you do a top 25 or even a top 10 we’ll definitely add you to our sources.

There will be a third set of top 25’s in December from rankingmma.com, also we might get mmarocks.pl to provide their full top 25.
