UFC Power Rankings: Featherweight Division

These power rankings are based on the statistical model I’ve developed (the details of which I’m going to keep close to the vest). The best-performing model ended up being based on the following statistical categories: significant strikes, knockdowns, takedowns, Fight Matrix rating, and age (younger is better). Fighters who rate well in these categories will end up rating well in my statistical model.

This rating has been developed in such a way that a rating of 0.00 represents an average UFC fighter.

There are some things I find very interesting about the power ranking for the featherweight division. First of all, yes, that’s Conor McGregor at #3, one spot AHEAD of Chad Mendes. I was surprised that Mendes didn’t rate a little higher than his #4 spot. I wonder if the model doesn’t compensate well enough for the fact that Mendes has 30 minutes of fighting against Jose Aldo on his statistical record.

Some interesting names appear in the top 30. These include Zubaira Tukhugov, Doo Ho Choi, Renato Moicano, Clay Collard, Mirsad Bektic, Chas Skelly, Mike Wilkinson, and Jim Alers. The thing these fighters have in common is a lack of experience in the UFC, but the model is not shy about saying that these fighters are quality, above-average featherweights.

As a fan of the old PRIDE fighters, it pains me to see Tatsuya Kawajiri sitting at #44. Kawajiri has been around forever, and his UFC performances have not been particularly inspiring. It’s a shame that Kawajiri only made it to the UFC in what is certainly the twilight of his career.
